Visiting Researcher at the University of Manitoba

I started my two month visiting researcher post at the Department of Icelandic Language & Literature, University of Manitoba last week.

During my stay I will be based at the Icelandic Collection in the Elizabeth Dafoe Library on the Fort Garry Campus.

The Icelandic Collection holds rich resources on the Icelandic immigration to North America in the late 19th century as well as a wealth of 19th and 20th century Icelandic literature.

Some of the collection was brought over by the emigrants themselves, evident in meters of shelf space under Icelandic psalm books, which most emigrants carried with them across the Atlantic.

The Elizabeth Dafoe library, furthermore, holds an excellent collection on the history of prairie settlement both primary and secondary along with a comprehensive list of scholarly research in the area from the settlement period to the modern day.
